The rights of people in Afghanistan are being crushed by the de facto authorities – with women and girls suffering the most.

UN High Commission for Human Rights, Volker Türk, says the extreme discrimination and oppression women and girls are facing amounts to persecution.

Stressing that the system of segregation is reminiscent of apartheid, the High Commissioner has urged Afghanistan’s de facto authorities to reverse the systematic exclusion of half the population.
